Flicker Folio

I went to Greece about two years ago, and it was the single best vacation I have ever taken. The people are friendly, the landscape is beautiful, and the food is to die for! I would love to go back, but I don't have room in the budget.

Instead, I decided to create a Flicker Folio of all of my favorite things from Santorini, my favorite Grecian Island. I wanted to virtually relive things like riding up the side of the mountain on a donkey and the beautiful windmills. If you want to see these wonderful places, go here.

I first just searched "Santorini." I was happily greeted with almost 350,000 results; unfortunately, many of the pictures on the first few pages were quite similar. I saw multiple images of the famous blue-domed churches and the towns build on the mountainside. I definitely wanted to add one of each to my gallery, but I was also looking for other specific images that correlated with my fond memories of the island.

To narrow it down to the images I wanted, I searched for:
  • Santorini Windmill
  • Santorini Flowers
  • Santorini Hot Springs
  • Santorini Donkey
  • Santorini Sunet
  • Santorini Black Beach-
  • Santorini Red Beach
  • Santorini Volcano- not the results I wanted not the results I was intending
  • Nea Kameni
  • Santorini Steps- not the results I wanted
Most of the searches has multiple good pictures on the first page. I found several beautiful examples of Santorini's flowers, for example. However, there were two search terms that didn't produce the results I wanted. The first one was for the volcano Santorini. I could not remember the name of the volcano we toured off the coast of the island, but I thought that a search of "Santorini volcano" would have good results. Instead, the results looked basically the same as when I just searched for Santorini- lots of landscapes and churches. The only way I found it was to do a Google image search, find the technical name (Nea Kameni) and re-search.

The other disappointing search was for "Santorini Steps." There are infamous steps up the side off the mountain that many people take donkey rides up and down. I was hoping to find a picture of the side of the mountain from the bottom or perhaps from a ship in the bay. Instead, the results were quite close up and didn't show the magnitude of the journey.

Overall, I found Flicker extremely easy to use. I am not very experienced with Flicker so I was afraid it might take me awhile to learn. Luckily, the learning curve is not steep. I simply searched, found a picture that I liked, and clicked "add to gallery." The first time I had to create a new gallery which I entitled Santorini, and every other time I just picked that gallery to add the new images to. I could then go to my gallery and simply drag and drop to reorder. There is also a button that allows you to easily delete the gallery.

Check out the gallery! I hope you find the pictures as awe-inspiring as I do!
